Hirano Shrine, Kyoto

4.0
With a rare architectural style and over 400 cherry trees from 60 breeds, Hirano Shrine tops the list of Kyoto’s favorite flower-viewing spots. Established in 794 CE and long associated with the royal family, the shrine is today famous for its magnificent cherry trees. As you wander around this popular spot, you can watch locals enjoying their "hanami," or flower-viewing parties. Lanterns scattered around the gorgeous gardens provide a spectacular sight during the blossoming season, particularly at night. You can also buy good luck charms and touch a majestic 400-year-old camphor tree. Plan to visit Hirano Shrine during your Kyoto vacation using our convenient Kyoto online driving holiday planner .

  • Because it was a short walk from Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, i went by set. Because it was sunny, the color of the light green with the vermilion (orange) of torii and the character of the plain shrine was written looked very beautiful. It seems to be a shrine with a lot of women, but torii also felt feminine. Unfortunately, the cherry blossoms were only a little left in the precincts, but i think that if the cherry blossoms bloom, they will be even more beautiful. I bought a charm and cherry salt, but when I put hot water, it bloomed beautifully. It was good to go.

  • There are many Japanese worshippers in the area where there are a lot of tourists from overseas, and you can feel the number of worshippers so that you can feel the crowds when there is a large area, so you can feel that it is a pretty popular shrine. You can enjoy cherry blossoms in early spring, but there are no cherry blossoms at this time of year.

  • It's a smaller area then Kitano Tenman-gu for example and actually I found it by accident. Still a pretty place. If you're around you should take a look. I was there in May so there were no cherry blossoms anymore but the many trees make it look pretty in summer too
  • Unfortunately this neighbourhood shrine has been badly damaged by cyclone Jebi,a pity
