【What is "Ami"?】

The foundation of Japanese traditional culture was laid in the Muromachi period. At that time, people called "ami" protected and promoted the emerging culture, including noh dance and the tea ceremony. They were priests who served a shogun or feudal lord, and sowed the seeds of our classical aesthetic values.

Ami emphasized equality, virtue, harmony and calmness in their contribution to cultural development. "Ami Kyoto" continues to spread their spirituality which still underlies the Japanese culture of today.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed both the sessions I attended at Ami Kyoto. Kimi helped me to understand the history and placement of flowers when doing Ikebana, making it a very relaxing and fun experience. The tea ceremony was also well worth doing. The tea was tasty and the history behind the ceremony interesting. The instructors for both sessions were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and the surroundings very peaceful. I would recommend doing these sessions just to get a real feel of Japan.
  • Had a wonderful time learning from the instructor the history and whole ritual of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, we got to practice making the tea and enjoy the end result.
