Miho Museum, Koka

4.5
Designed by world-renowned architect I. M. Pei, Miho Museum houses a collection of rare and ancient artwork nestled in the mountains. Commissioned by wealthy philanthropist (and religious leader) Mihoko Koyama for her private collection, the building largely lies underground--carved into the rocky mountainside and covered with a steel-and-glass roof. Enter by traversing an unusual cable bridge and walking through a shining tunnel. Inside, observe a variety of artifacts from Asia and the Western world. Our Koka itinerary site makes visiting Miho Museum and other Koka attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • I went to Miho Museum. On an electric car, we passed through a clean tunnel and went to the entrance of the museum building. When I entered the building, I felt like I had come to another world. It was very beautiful that japanese and world art works were on display. The art works of ancient Egypt were particularly impressive.

  • It is a 50-minute bus ride from Ishiyama Station. I entered the depths of the mountains on the road along the valley and finally arrived when I began to wonder if there were any museums in places like this. Ten minutes' walk from there. Beyond the bridge through the tunnel, you'll see a super-modern but somewhat Japanese museum building. This approach is the greatest feature of museums. It is said that the concept is the Momogengo legend that the lost hunter reaches paradise in the mountains, but that's exactly what it is. Recently, there are many museums that i dared to make in inconvenient places, but I think there is no other place that is thorough so far. There were a lot of foreigners coming, but it can also be nodded. I think it's a one-of-a-kind museum.

  • A great day trip from Kyoto. It's a bit long to reach there (1h30 from Kyoto Station) but worth it. Clear direction on their website for access. The bus costs 820¥ one way. The entrance for college student is 760¥.
  • Fun museum. The food was good, and the tofu was really creamy. I think the nicest part of the museum is the architecture. FYI, there is a video playing in the museum that will tell you about the history of the museum.
