Kokura Castle, Kitakyushu

Visit the historic Kokura Castle, a former clan and military base, now reconstructed and housing a number of cultural attractions. Built in 1602, the castle was central to regional clan wars, burnt down during the clash between the Kokura and Choshu clans in 1866, and used as a military base at the turn of the 20th century. The architecture of the keep--reconstructed in 1959--has a particularly aesthetic, with its tough stone base standing in contrast to the modern city that surrounds it. Stop off at the folklore museum during your visit, as well as the institution dedicated to crime writer Seicho Matsumoto. • A 15-minute walk from Kokura Station. Built in 1569, the castle was abandoned in 1866. Only stone walls and moats remain as traces of the old castle. The current tower was rebuilt in 1959 with reinforced concrete, but it seems to be different from the original. The inside of the castle is a museum without leaking perhaps. Admission is 350 yen, and the three facilities common tickets for Kokura Castle Gardens and Matsumoto Kiyowari Memorial Hall are 700 yen. From the top floor, you can see the surrounding scenery, but you can't feel the atmosphere because you can only see the dense buildings in the big city.

  • Nice place to go and quite easy access thanks to the signs in English language on the street. I definitely recommend to visit this place. For now (Oct. 2018) the inside of the castle is closed but the garden is nice and the entrance is free. I also advise not to limit yourselves to the gardens but to go the the neighbouring shrine. Put the Kokura castle on your to do list !
  • Small size castle but is kept is good condition. You can enjoy historic and also the view from the castle.
