At Kirishima Shrine, explore the "realm where gods once descended." Once located at the foot of Mount Takachiho-no-mine, this Shinto refuge suffered repeated destruction from volcanic eruptions. The current shrine, last reconstructed in 1715, rests surrounded by tall pine trees and ranks as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Examine the traditional Japanese architectural style, where vermilion lacquered columns and joists stand decorated with richly colored reliefs. Visit the 800-year-old sacred pine tree, believed to have powers to answer prayers. In fall, forest leaves blend with the shrine, creating a harmonious and vibrant scene. Stop by the tourist information office at the entrance for help and guidance. Put Kirishima Shrine at the forefront of your travel plans using our Kirishima online route planner.
