Iwakuni Castle, Iwakuni

#1 of 13 in Historic Sites in Iwakuni
Connected to the world via ropeway, Iwakuni Castle has a natural defense advantage. Feudal Lord Kikkawa Hiroie built it in 1608, but the castle was torn down shortly after because of the strict law of "one castle per province." After its destruction, a part of the citadel served as the residential office for Kikkawa. The reconstructed building stands four stories high on a hilltop. Visit the observation room at the top, where you can admire the panoramic view of the city and the Kintai Bridge. Buy a ticket at the entrance of the bridge, which gives you access to the bridge, the ropeway in both directions, and the castle grounds. • It takes about 10 minutes to walk from Kintaibashi Bridge to get to the ropeway. We took the ropeway to the top, and from there we walked along the mountain path to Iwakuni Castle. The mountain path is humid and the time when there are mosquitoes is the worst, but it was easy to walk because it was a cool, gentle road.

  • Definitely worthwhile to go and visit the Iwakuni Castle. The castle was rebuilt in 1962 as a museum which does a nice job of going through its history. What is also quite interesting are the Samurai ...  more »

  • Not as large as the other castles in Japan, but a worthy spot to visit. Great views from the top deck if you're able to walk. Not recommended for people in wheel chairs. Inside the castle you'll be able to view a handful of armor, swords and artifacts. The walk down the hill back to the rope-way winds down a well wooded forest.
  • Accessible by hiking many trails or catching a tram that is near Kintaikyo Bridge. Incredible views and great historical exibits in the castle. A must see!
