The Tower of Himeyuri, Itoman

4.3
Visit The Tower of Himeyuri, a memorial to the lives of school students and teachers lost during the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. Part of a wider peace park and museum complex, the simple monolith was inaugurated in 1946, dedicated to the 230 young people and teachers who died tending wounded soldiers at the field hospital in the cave behind the memorial. The pleasant gardens contrast with the austerity of the structure itself, and the whole site possesses a hushed atmosphere. • I visited with my family in August. I had the image of a common tower, so where is the child tower?? It was made on the gama which was actually used as a ward, and nursing while being frightened by enemy shells in the cave which was actually used as a ward might have been very severe and frightened. A bouquet of flowers is sold at the entrance for 200 yen. When we arrived around 4pm, there were a lot of souvenir shops along the surrounding road, but when we left at 5 pm after the tour of the facility, the shutters were closed.

  • I went to Okinawa with my family, so I stopped by to put the meaning of peace learning. It is optional, but we purchased the flower (200 yen) sold at the entrance and dedicated it to the flower arrangement stand of the tower. We also entered the museum (300 yen/person) and visited it. The remnants of the girls and staff of my children and their generation, about 15 to 20 years old, were lined up, and I felt the stupidity of the disastrous war. I didn't take any pictures. You can park your car at an adjoining souvenir shop (it's free, but buy some souvenirs on your way home).

  • If you are a history buff, this is definitely worth a visit. Many graves in the area, including caves where students and teachers alike died. Not many eateries nearby, so be sure to eat before visiting. There's part of the memorial that requires tickets. Adult ticket: 310 yen. Be prepared to walk quite a long distance. Easily accessible by bus.
  • Very powerful, humbling experience. A solemn place to respect the sacrifices made by two countries at war. The air is still and a beautiful, somewhat eerie feeling sends you chills when you see the caves these Japanese Medical Students hid in. A real must see for history buffs and tourists looking to experience "both" sides of the war.
