Observe the resilience of life at Shukkei-en Garden--just a short walk away from ground zero of the World War II nuclear attack, which obliterated almost everything. Originally commissioned in 1620, the garden morphed throughout history while still maintaining its purpose--to shrink natural scenery, making it seem larger than its actual size. Hence, the grounds boast representations of mountains, valleys, rivers, lakes, and islets. Thanks to local enthusiasm, the garden reopened in 1951 after the war, and now it welcomes all guests to participate in monthly tea ceremonies and leisurely activities. It can get busy during weekends, especially when plums and cherries blossom, or when maples turn red in fall. When we went, a couple of married in traditional dress had come to take pictures. A moment suspended in time, very beautiful!!
In our view, this is a must when in Hiroshima. We found the gardens delightful and one of the best of its kind in Japan. The gardens are a representation of a landscape presented in miniature. Mounds ... more »
