Trip Planner: Asia / Japan / Chubu / Koshinetsu / Yamanashi Prefecture / Minamitsuru-gun / Fujikawaguchiko-machi / Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba
Under the arresting gaze of Mt. Fuji sits the traditional village of Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba. Once the site of some of the finest thatched buildings in the country, it was unfortunately destroyed by landslide during a 1966 typhoon. Now, 20 reconstructed buildings make up an open-air museum, giving you a chance to explore and experience the village as it once stood. Stop for a moment in the museum on erosion and sediment control, where you'll learn about the disaster of the 60s and the measures taken to prevent such a fate recurring. Afterwards, explore shops and restaurants showing off traditional artisan goods and cuisines. Look out for opportunities to try your hand at some of the craft workshops, and consider a photoshoot in traditional dress, available to rent here. Put Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba into our Fujikawaguchiko-machi online visit planner to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Fujikawaguchiko-machi.

Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba Reviews
A quiet attraction which offers a glimpse into how traditional Japanese would live in the past. But overall not too much to see or do - the shops were quaint but did not have much to offer - more brow... more »
This is an interesting village to see how hoses used to be in this area. It is a nice village to walk round with views of Fuji over the thatched roofed houses. Some of the houses had shops in but ther... more »
It is a very nice place to visit. Just take green line bus from Kawakushigo station, get off at stop number 68. Bus come pass every 30 minutes. Also try local food on the main entrance on the way back... Various of good local food and fruit. When walking around the village , on the top left hand side, there is "Grandmother shop" ... You really have to visit these 2 kindness Grandma, they sell all those handmade stuff, very good price.
It's rather commercial I thought, even if quite a few of the shops/activities were closed when we visited. A quick browse in some of the shops produced a few desirable things, but frankly much was not of particular quality or interest. The reconstructed/renovated houses in this location devastated by mudslides some years ago are a worthwhile tribute to the lives and properties destroyed, and are of some interest. I wish the exhibition about what happened and its aftermath had been signed in English as I think it would have been very interesting. The high-spot for many (as it was for us) is the store that has a huge collection of male/female Japanese costumes to rent and wear around the site. Wonderful photo opportunities, lots of fun, especially if you are with a group of friends. Other than that, we enjoyed the Hida Folk Village in Takayama more than this similar village.
