Pay a visit to Yushima Tenmangu, a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tenjin, the "kami" (spirit) of learning. Established in 458 CE in honor of the kami of strength and sports, the shrine was greatly expanded in 1355 to enshrine Tenjin, thus becoming a place of pilgrimage for scholars and thinkers. Today, prospective students arrive at the shrine to offer "ema" (wooden plaques containing prayers) in the hope that they will pass the entrance exams for the nearby university. The grounds have been dotted with "ume" (plum) trees, because Tenjin was known to be particularly fond of them. • I visited to pray for my son's teacher recruitment exam. I thought that it was just right and purchased it because there was a talisman of the qualification victory protection. In winter, there were many people praying for the pass, but we were able to worship without waiting. There was a ring of chi in the ritual of the exorcism of Natsukoshi. I didn't hesitate because there was a way to visit the shrine. It is said that it is good to rub the place where the cow is good.

  • It is a little from Yushima Station. At the shrine dedicated to the god sugawara michima of learning, many examinees come and write a wish to ema and dedicate it. There seem to be a lot of people who come from a long distance.

  • I generally only visit this shrine during the Plum Blossom festival in February. I like this shrine because it's relatively easy to find when using Google Maps. The Shrine is also near the Ueno area which has a nice park and a lot of eating areas. If you get there during the peak of the plum blossom season, you'll be treated to quite a sight. The photos I loaded with this review are from my last visit and as you can tell, I was a bit late in the season. The visit was still fun however, as there are a variety of food and drink stands open. It's so relaxing to enjoy a tea or a beer under these trees.
  • If you would like to visit an old shrine with long history then this is one of such oldest Shinto shrines around Tokyo. This shrine is also called as Yushima Tenjin. This is a small shrine located close to Ueno park and Tokyo University. This shrine seems to be initially devoted for the God of sports and physical power. This shrine seems gained great popularity during Edo period after the visit of many scholars. The current structure of the shrine was rebuilt in 1995 with cypress trees. Now this shrine is devoted to the God of learning "Tenjin". The major annual events like Hatsumode (New year), Une Mathiri (Plum blossom between Feb. 7~Mar. 7), Tension-sai(Grand festival on May 25) and Kiku Mathiri (Chrysanthemum festival on Nov. 23) attracts lots of visitors here. This shrine is popular among students to pray for their good results in exam.
