Rikugien Garden, Bunkyo

4.3
#7 of 254 in Parks in Tokyo
Stroll through Rikugien Garden, a peaceful oasis inspired by poetry in the heart of Tokyo. Signage in English explains the connection between the gardens and excerpts of poetry, as you enjoy the scenery of cherry blossoms and the park's small pond. The park really shines during the autumn months, as lights illuminate the red and orange hues of the foliage after dark. You can find amenities throughout the garden, including snack stalls and restrooms. To visit Rikugien Garden on your trip to Tokyo, use our Tokyo trip tool .

  • It is a daimyo garden in style rockery fountain in the current age of the 5th Shogun tsunayoshi was the kawagoe clan residence Lord Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu was building. Views placed overlooking the garden of the highest artificial Hill, whose name derives from Kishu, "Fujishiro pass" and Dai-Sensui mainly Waka's hobby colours "sister mountain, 脊山, togetsu-Kyo", Dai-Sensui and Chaya. Trail is sometimes lost to more complex there, and 嗜nndari wild buckwheat and tea in a tea shop, while in the elegant garden of the Edo period atmosphere, often drunk.

  • A little out of the beaten path for travelers to Tokyo, this gem of a garden is nonetheless a very worthwhile trip to the north of Tokyo. Built by a wealthy feudal Lord, this garden finds its inspiration in Chinese classical works. The gigantic weeping cherry blossom at the entrance is a sight to behold during cherry blossom festival and the rest of the garden is a serene visual treat. The park lights up till 9pm for cherry blossom viewing, but other times it's closed at 5pm.
  • Small and relaxing park. Blooming flowers all year long according to guide. Visited it in early June, wonderful azalea were blooming.
  • Beautiful park. I'm sure it's even more so during cherry blossom time. Definitely had a lovely walk through here.
  • A very nice garden in the middle of a big city. Pretty decent as Tokyo parks go but not that great compared to, for example, Kamakura temple gardens.
  • Simply amazing... Elegant, spotless and wonderful. Staff was somehow rude though.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Tokyo abounds with excellent places to stay, from luxury affairs to humble budget-friendly lodgings. Its glittering skyscrapers house numerous international four- and five-star hotels, both in the populous cultural hotspots of Shinjuku and in the business centers of Akasaka and Shinbashi. Meanwhile, hostels catering to the shoestring traveler lie scattered throughout the city. For a memorable, distinctly Japanese experience, seek out a ryokan, a traditional bed and breakfast with tatami floor mats and sliding screen doors.
