Umi Jigoku, Beppu

4.0
Order eggs boiled in naturally scorching pond of Umi Jigoku as its steam rises from the cobalt-blue surface. Formed over 1,300 years ago, this boiling 200 m (600 ft) deep volcanic wonder of nature is considered the grandest of eight similar "sea hells" in the area. However, if you prefer something more tranquil, visit the gardens with lotus-covered ponds or take a foot bath in milder hot springs. You can also taste egg custard, a local specialty. With our online itinerary creator, Beppu attractions like Umi Jigoku can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • If you want to visit the 8 "hells" of Beppu (natural hot springs) and have little time, I recommend making 3 that are side by side and can be done on foot: Kamado Jigoku, Onishi bozu jigoku and this one: Umi jigoku (hell of the sea). I recommend doing it last because it is the largest and most impressive of all, especially the large cobalt blue lake. Warning: the water is 100 degrees, it bubbles and smokes, they cook eggs ... Very interesting for children who discover the specifics of certain aspects of nature. At the bottom of the park, we discover a greenhouse with large water lilies, each could hold a child up to 20 kg! A very impressive, even disturbing visit not to be missed in Beppu.

  • I thought it was a sea hell and it was big like the sea, but it was "blue". There was a beautiful shop and I bought pudding and ate it. There was so much steam that I couldn't see the blue hell.

  • This Jigoku is large and there’s plenty to discover by walking around. I’m glad we didn’t buy the pass, instead paying individual entrance fees as I had less time than I thought I’d have and the busses are infrequent (and don’t run on time). There was even a red-coloured pool, which satisfied my desire to see Chinoike Jigoku, which I couldn’t due to time constraints. To get a good view of the blue pond, climb up the stairs of the gift shop.
  • “地獄組合地獄めぐり” service is so bad. “地獄組合地獄めぐり”の写真屋さんのマナー悪い! Today my wife and my daughter went to 海地獄 and they wanted to take the photo, the photographer took pictures for others but said”NO” with bad attitude to my wife and my daughter ONLY, and my daughter was scared and started crying that she really wanted to take the photo with the board(as the attached photo) It is the worst experience we ever been in Japan.
