A Shinto place of worship believed to have been built in the fifth century BCE, Izusan Jinja Shrine boasts several national treasures, such as a deep blue and gold-painted heart sutra, and many intricately executed statues of deities. Overlooking the entire town, the shrine features an exquisite vermilion-colored fountain with a red and a white dragon spewing water into it. Enno Ozuno, the father of mountaineering asceticism, and Kukai, the father of the Shingon School, reportedly trained here. Although the shrine can be reached by car, you can challenge yourself by climbing the stone stairs--837 of them--along a scenic path lined by cherry and yuzu trees.
