Completed in 645 CE, Senso-ji Temple holds the status of being the oldest temple in Tokyo. The temple grounds contain an independent Buddhist temple and a Shinto shrine. Enter through the imposing Thunder Gate and walk the shopping street, lined with about 90 food and souvenir shops and dating back to the early 18th century, up to the main hall. The temple complex, including the main hall, contains buildings both historic and reconstructed since World War II. Don’t miss the five-story pagoda and the garden and pond surrounding the "Demboin" (high priest’s residence). Senso-ji Temple Reviews
平日の午後でしたが、仲見世通りは浴衣を着た女性達で大にぎわい。参拝客も日本人よりも外国人観光客が多く色んな国の言葉があふれてました。御朱印も平日の為行列は無くすぐいただけました、 more »It was a weekday afternoon, but Nakamise-dori street was crowded with women wearing yukata. Probably the most famous and visited shrine in Tokyo. And not without any reason, the building itself is huge on its own and you would appreciate it most. The grounds are also huge and you can stroll around the place all day long. With so many tourist visiting, comes all the shops also, they have almost everything in shops surrounding. Visiting during the day would be really packed, but lively as well.
Awe inspiring! Highly recommend coming early in the morning or later in the evening. The crowds are gone, and you can see the cool shutter art on closed shops and the grounds all lit up. Photos attached for reference (with and without crowds). There are toilets easily accessible and plenty of vending machines around.
