Asahiyama Zoo, Asahikawa

Enjoy an outing to Asahiyama Zoo, which makes up for its small size in the variety of animal species sheltered there. Wildlife includes penguins, seals, leopards, polar bears, wolves, and red pandas. You can also step into the role of the "prey" at a glass dome, which puts the observer at eye level with wolves and polar bears. • A must visit during winter for the penguin walk! The show lasts for about 30 minutes. I came here by tour so I didn't have enough time for the rest of the zoo animals but the penguins are the main att...  more »
  • It was a 40-minute bus ride from Asahikawa Station, but when I went there, it was about half an hour. However, it is a weekday and the bus is full. It is a commuter train par. The park is not so wide and can go around quickly, but it is very close to the exhibition where the animal can be seen well, and I do not get tired even if I watch it very much. The walk of the Penguin will continue to line up from the start place, but I think that I do not have to secure the place from early because I think that the wrapping point is the most easy to see.

  • While the Penguin Walk is the biggest highlight of this zoo, there are also many other attractions here too. Highly recommend the snowy owls. If you are a Harry Potter fan, you would love them a lot. The time when I was there, they didn't really move much. One was camouflaged in the snow on the ground while the other was resting gracefully on a branch. It was such a peaceful scene and it was fun just to see them turning only their heads with their bodies stationary, scrutinizing the visitors around them.
  • Must go for the penguin walk. Queue up early for the 940am bus cus it's packed! Don't worry if u miss it though. The penguin walk starts at 11am but they take a good 40min to complete their walk so just be there by then. If u can't there's still the afternoon one, though not in late Feb to Mar. Have fun!
