We got the number 20 waterbus from San Marco out to San Servolo to get the 10.45 entrance to the museum. They only allow people in at 10.45 or 2pm. We went in at 10.45 and were the only people there..... more »
Worth the visit and very reasonable entry fee. Interesting and obscure history to make a trip to venice really unique and see a part of venice not many visitors see.
This museum is certainly interesting but is quite small and didn't quite meet my expectations. I would recommend avoiding it unless you are into science or mental health facilities and if you've seen most of what the main part of Venice has to offer. It contains 2 main hallways and a few small rooms with limited pictures of the place when it was in use. There are some instruments and equipment that seems original with some information about it in Italian and most of the time English as well (some minor things are only in Italian, a good opportunity for Google Lense). I was expecting a creepy vibe or things to be set up as they used to be when the institution was functioning but this wasn't the case at all. Instead, items and pictures were on display with information. There were 2 rooms (operating rooms and pharmacy) that the employee led us to and opened separately. I would make sure to see the operation room at least. It had an operating table as well as real human skulls and brains on display. The creepiest room of the entire museum! The pharmacy was a cool little room to briefly look at but not incredibly interesting. You can get here pretty easily and quickly (15 minutes) by vaporetto (public ferry). Buy your return tickets before arriving because the machine for tickets on the island was broken. You buy tickets for the museum downstairs and then enter upstairs. Not sure if they take credit card, I used cash.
