Immerse yourself in the city's history and art with a visit to Duomo di Siena, considered one of the country's greatest medieval churches. Built in several stages and combining elements of the Gothic, Romanesque, and Classical architectural styles, the cathedral was consecrated in 1215. The building has the form of a Latin cross, featuring a slightly projecting transept, bell tower, and a dome, parts of which were designed by architect Gianlorenzo Bernini. The cathedral is constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with red marble added to the facade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, linked to the black and white horses of the legendary founders of the city, Senius and Aschius. The building also includes a renowned museum of Italian sculpture, displaying works by Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo. All-inclusive tickets are available online, providing access to the entire cathedral complex, including the terrace above the museum with its views of the city. There were too many people inside. That was the bad thing. The good thing is that the architecture outside and details inside were nice. more »

It is a beautiful cathedral! From the roof to the floor, one is awed by the art all around! Despite the constant inflow of tourists, if you find a place to sit in the first row that is not cordoned off, you can experience great peace. We were lucky that our tour was on that one day in a year when the floors are all uncovered and people can marvel at all the fantastic mosaic works . In a small town like Siena, this one is really a not to be missed place!

The cathedral itself is simply amazing. We wanted to climb up the "new" unfinished facade but spent over an hour waiting in line - the line is inside the building, so you end up waiting for access to the stairwell in poorly air conditioned room with only a few chairs to sit. The views from the top are nice but it is not worth waiting in line for an hour. The access could have been much better organized (e.g. with limiting time at the top) but, as in many other places in Italy, nobody cares as they know that the place will be filled with tourists anyway.
