  • There a no plaques explaining anything, the engravings are in worse shape than the 2000 year older roman ones, and nothing in other languages. It is a somber place and you can read the story online...  more »

  • This is one of those little known sites, off the tourist track in Rome, but anyone with an interest in the history of Rome during the latter stages of WW2 will find this memorial and the history behind it both chilling, informative and deeply emotional and thought provoking. The site commemorates the massacre of 335 innocent Italian citizens by the German occupiers of Rome in 1944, in a blood curdling and depraved revenge for the attack by Italian resistance against a group of German SS police. The 335 victims were rounded up, taken to this set of caves, and summarily shot by the Germans in groups of five. They then blew up the cave with mines in an attempt to hide their shameful handiwork. The memorial you see today lets you enter the cave complex and get a feeling for the atmosphere of this terrible deed. There are copious info boards and helpful plaques, and although they're all in Italian, a basic knowledge of Italian, Spanish or even Latin will explain it all. There's a very good article on Wikipedia which is also helpful. Close by is a mausoleum with individual tombs for all the victims, whose remains were retrieved after the war. It's deeply moving to see a small photograph and especially the age of the murdered citizens : some as young as 15! There is also a small museum with a very interesting display of documents, boards and other items from the times, as well as the various architectural plans for the memorial. This terrible event runs deep in the minds of Romans, and they do visit, but on the day I was there, I was the only person there. The attendant was very friendly and helpful, and I also spoke as well as my Italian would allow with two extremely dignified retired Italian soldiers who were also on duty. The monument is very easy to get to, with a bus stop right outside. It is served by the No. 218 bus from San Giovanni in Laterano. The whole complex is incredibly moving, highly informative and very tastefully set out, in a dignified and respectful fashion. It's difficult to imagine that a nation who produced Beethoven and Bach could sink to such depths of inhuman depravity. Bloody Germans.
  • Important place to visit, to keep alive the memory of the past and understand European story
