Trip Planner: Europe / Italy / Campania / Province of Naples / Ercolano / Parco Acheologico di Ercolano
Just a 30-minute train ride from Naples, Parco Acheologico di Ercolano is the site of an ancient settlement frozen in time when the nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in the year 79, also destroying nearby Pompeii, Stabiae, Oplontis, and part of Boscoreale. Allegedly founded by Hercules, this city was once a renowned seaside resort where some of the richest Romans spent their summer vacations. The wealthy city's streets were lined with elegant private houses and public buildings, many covered in marble. This ancient site is one of the few places in the world that can be seen in almost its original condition, because a deep layer of hot mud buried it deeply enough to preserve even the upper stories of buildings. The hot ash conserved thousands of everyday household objects, including beds, doors, and even food. Today, this World Heritage site offers modern visitors a chance to see how ordinary people lived nearly 2 millennia ago. Tickets can be purchased in advance by phone or online. With our custom trip planner, Ercolano attractions like Parco Acheologico di Ercolano can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Parco Acheologico di Ercolano reviews
Herculaneum is such a fascinating part of history and is the lesser known city of the 79A.D. Mt.Vesuvius explosion. It was fascinating to see certain things (like 2,000 year old wood) that were... more »
The slightly less famous cousin of Pompeii, Ercolano, which is a lot closer to the city of Naples, is arguably even better a preserved site of Roman ruins. While it’s more famous contemporary is... more »
Pint sized version of Pompeii but more complete. Truly remarkable as it has intact wooden doors and ceilings, plus 3 storey buildings. An eerie experience to walk around without the energy needed to conquer the enormous Pompeii. Also contains the haunting skeletons of the women and children in the boathouses. Truly an amazing and humbling experience. Cheap too.
Disclaimer: I’m a huge Ancient Rome/Greece nerd. I used one of my free entrances of my artecard (highly recommended) on Herculaneum, so I was able to get into the site rather quickly. The wait was less than 5 minutes. I did not have a guide because I did a lot of research prior to visiting. If you also do not plan on joining a guided tour, I would highly recommend the guide booklet next to the ticket booth (free) Now the Herculaneum itself. The site is simply amazing for anyone who is interested in Ancient Rome. It is very well preserved, and you can enter nearly every building. Unlike Pompeii most buildings still have frescoes and over all Herculaneum is much much better preserved. A further bonus is that Herculaneum is a lot less crowded. The only negative is that only a fraction of Herculaneum has been excavated making the site rather small. That all being said I have a recommendation. If you want to visit both Pompeii (4/5 stars) and Herculaneum I would highly recommend not visiting them on the same day since a thorough tour of Pompeii take 5-6 hours and a tour of Herculaneum 2.5-3 hours. Also, I would recommend visiting Pompeii first since you will be more impressed with Herculaneum than because of how well everything is preserved.
