Grotta dello Smeraldo, Conca dei Marini

2.5
#3 of 9 in Nature in Amalfi Coast
Named for the color reflected in the waters within, Grotta dello Smeraldo is a small cave partly filled with seawater. Sunlight is refracted through the water, which gives the cave its ethereal emerald glow. This is similar to the better-known, and more impressive, Blue Grotto on the nearby island of Capri. With no natural opening above the waterline, the cave wasn't discovered until 1932. Take the elevator down into the cave, then board a small boat to tour the grotto. • The boat trip was ok and some nice views but for the distance a bit pricey. But the cave was crass and cringeworthy. The cave was nice enough but seen more spectacular. Really not worth it particularl...  more »
  • Nice place very charming, I'm very glad to have been there and I recommend it to everyone. The cave is small and the boat ride lasts very little. The gentleman who accompanied us by boat was too nice and made us die of laughter even though most (being foreigners) definitely did not understand what he was saying and the jokes he made! I vote more than positive overall!

  • Nice experience. Recommended to get there early (about 10am or before) in order to have easy parking. If you don't have parking you can wait a little and somebody will move, since the whole thing takes about 30min.
  • A spur of the moment adventure. It was a nice and interesting natural cave. Guessing about 40 to 50 yards in diameter. The small boat ride inside was cramped and did not take long to go around. I did not get any good pictures but you can see it online. Still glad to have seen it.
