Set in a gorge on Monte Subasio, Eremo delle Carceri served as a place of worship and solitude for St. Francis of Assisi during the 13th century. Explore the paths and archways of the retreat, which have been expanded over the centuries since St. Francis' death. Admire the complex's stonework, set on a hillside at an elevation of 791 m (2,595 ft). Wind your way through inner courtyards and small chapels to the cave of St. Francis. A small group of Franciscan monks use the monastery now. The hike up to the monastery—even from the parking lot—is somewhat steep. Quiet, forested retreat. Wander about, watch for short doorways (!), sit, breathe Views are wondrous. more »

An interesting, peaceful, thought-provoking place to visit. It's not presented as a museum and there's very little information for visitors to read so it's worth researching St Francis and his life before you go so you understand the context of what you're seeing during your visit. Parking is free on the roads outside and there's no entrance fee, although donations are welcome. It didn't seem too crowded, even on a Thursday at 11am, presumably because coaches can't reach the place.

Stunningly beautiful. I have been to a lot of beautiful places in nature but I think this Hermitage is truly the most beautifully peaceful place I have ever been. Even on a blistering hot day, there a re cool breezes through the big old trees and you can hear birds and wild life all around you. No surprise St Francis had spiritual moments here. It's a sacred place, so even though there a miles of trails, it's not a place to come for hiking or picnics but to quietly appreciate the natural beauty of the place.
