Cripta di San Francesco, Assisi

4.9
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Cripta di San Francesco houses the simple stone sarcophagus with earthly remains of one of the most famous Catholic saints of all time. St. Francis' remains lay hidden beneath the church until the early 19th century when the crypt was open to public. The present interior was designed by architect Ugo Tarchi in 1932. The tombs of the saint's disciples and the original friars of the Franciscan Order occupy the four niches. Notice the votive lamp burning in front of the tomb, also designed by Tarchi and engraved with Dante's verses. Be prepared to wait in lines to enter the crypt, since many pilgrims come to pray in front of the saint's tomb.
