Yardenit, Kinneret

#1 of 6 in Things to do in Kinneret
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Pilgrims flock to Yardenit, a popular baptism and pilgrimage spot on the Israeli side of the Jordan River. Although Jesus is believed to have been baptized in Al-Maghtas, on the Palestinian side of the river, this site served as a substitute for the original baptism location after the Six-Day War until it reopened in 2011. Join the flocks of pilgrims from all over the world and of different faiths, who come here to see the holy river, buy a bottle of the sacred water, and participate in a baptism ritual. A visit to Yardenit represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Kinneret trip itinerary website to plot your vacation.

  • This is the site where you can get baptised on Jordan River. Pretty nice place and there are some birdlife here as well. Recommended to visit esp. for believers.  more »
  • the site is located at the exit of the Jordan River from the Sea of Galilee, it was prepared for baptisms for christian pilgrims, all is well organized and there are plenty of stairs for the groups...  more »
  • I was surprised by Yardenit, though i shouldn't have been. I expected that we were going to the Jordan River, which we did, but i wasn't expecting how commercial it was. Thinking about it now, i should have realized it would be commercial. Anyway, there are a number of fenced off areas so that different groups can be in the river at the same time, being baptized. It was a beautiful area, very serene. You can rent or buy white gowns to be baptized in. Our tour guide warned that you will need clothes under the gown. It becomes see-through when wet. There is a nice gift shop associated with the site. I felt like their prices were fair enough. People who worked there were friendly, but not overbearing. Everyone spoke English. There was no problem with taking American money. This is NOT where in the Jordan that Jesus was baptized. But, it IS the same river and in the Holy Land and where most tour groups stop for pilgrims to be baptized.
  • Very beautiful place to go visit. Especially if you are not from the area. It's been 5 years since I've visited but from what I remember there were many things to go see.
