Trip Planner: Europe / Ireland / Province of Leinster / County Kilkenny / Kilkenny / Thomastown / Jerpoint Abbey
Deemed a National Monument of Ireland, the ruins of Jerpoint Abbey showcase Romanesque architectural details with a scenic backdrop. Dating back to the 12th century, the well-preserved abbey ruins and stone carvings are explained at the visitor center by going through the informative exhibits. Before entering the ruins, read some of the provided literature on the abbey or book a guided tour. Afterwards, head to the nearby Newtown Jerpoint, where the grave of Saint Nicholas is rumored to be. Jerpoint Abbey reviews

Don’t think our taxes are being put to good use at this site. Staff did not even peek out to give any information on the wet day we visited. The visitor centre is closed and when I persisted I was... more »
We stopped by Jerpoint Abbey on our way from Kilkenny to Waterford. It was a minor detour and worth going. We went Monday morning and pretty much had the place to ourselves. Very nice grounds despite the construction scaffolding. Was a chance to learn some local history and capture some picturesque shots. Just a note for those considering it - they did not take credit cards while we were there. Bring cash.
Just as in previous reviews the ongoing works take away from the photo aspect of the abbey itself (there are all on the inside) . But the car park is a fine size. the ladies taking the entrance fee were so nice and the place was spotless. It was clear blue skies on the day of my visit and there is loads to see, the arches and the stone work, the tombs, the engraving on the tombs and the carvings around the arches. The court yard is a lovely place to rest, relax and take in a different time for this country. We will never see anything like this again because modern building practices do not have this quality of finish. This is suitable for all ages and families and no climbing is required. Its a lovely place to visit and I'm glad I made it as part of my to do list. Cheers
