Older than the Egyptian pyramids, Bru na Boinne serves as the largest Neolithic archeological complex in Europe, designated as a World Heritage Site. Situated around a wide bend of the Boyne River, this 5,000-year-old site includes mounds, chamber tombs, standing stones, and henges, encompassing about 800 hectares (2,000 acres). The site's star attractions are three passage graves built with an impressive knowledge of science and astronomy and containing significant collections of megalithic art. You can access these tombs by guided tour only, available at the visitor center in the nearby town of Donore. The complex receives only 650 people each day, so arrive at the center as early as possible to ensure your place on the tour. It took us two stops here before we could get in, but it was one of the favorite activities of the entire two-week vacation on the Emerald Isle. The day we arrived, we drove north of Dublin Airport..... more »
So glad that they have restricted tours for here. Keeps the crowds manageable and allows you to have a bit of time exploring the site not having to jostle elbows. Would so much love to come back on the solstice to see the light come into the chamber for myself, but the guide did a nice job of mimicking it.
Fantastic place and very well run, especially considering the current renovations going on. We had great weather for our walk and the short trip to Newgrange. Great for a family visit.
