Constructed in 1896 for the Millenium World Exhibition, Liberty Bridge (Szabadsag hid) opened in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph, who inserted the last silver rivet into the iron structure himself. This art deco bridge connects Buda and Pest across the Danube; on its four masts sit large bronze statues of the Turul, a falcon-like bird prominent in ancient Hungarian mythology. Destroyed during WWII by retreating German troops, it was the first bridge to be reconstructed after the end of the war. Take the tram or walk across the bridge to capture panoramic views of the Chain Bridge and Monument Hill.
