Dohány Street Synagogue, Budapest

3.9
Steep yourself in Judaism and Moorish Revival architecture at Dohány Street Synagogue, the largest synagogue in Europe, which can seat 3,000 people. Viennese architect Ludwig Forster built the structure between 1854 and 1859 using Islamic influences typical of North Africa and medieval Spain. The synagogue experienced significant destruction during Nazi occupation, when it was bombed and used as a German radio base and stable. However, it was restored to its original design during reconstruction in 1991 and 1998. Visit the site's Heroes' Temple, Jewish Museum, Jewish Cemetery, and Raoul Wallenberg Holocaust Memorial Park. Step inside to see the synagogue's spectacular interior, famous for the colorful, geometric frescoes designed by Hungarian architect Frigyes Feszl. • It is an essential place to visit the city. It is worth entering and enjoying a guided tour of its interior. The museum is less essential, but you can visit with the same entrance.

  • When I arrived at the checkout, first bad surprise: - 4500 Ft for the visit, while my tour guide indicated 3000 Ft (published in 2017 !!!). Second nasty surprise: - they try to force me to wear a kippah at the entrance of the building. That is to say once I paid. It would have been honest to have been given this information before payment. I wish I had a choice. There, I paid my ticket for nothing. I was refused entry... for no good reason for me. I do not have to submit to a religion that is not mine. I had just come to discover it and I leave bitter, with the feeling of having been taken.

  • Steeped in history and with multi lingual tours everyone gets a chance to explore the history and culture of this wonderful building. Regardless of your faith or beliefs this is a must see if in and around the Pest area. It has great restaurant options in close proximity
  • Beautiful place. We haven't been on the tour recently but when we did in 2009 it was fantastic. Still a gorgeous place to visit and read a little about the history while you are nearby. Lovely cafes around the synagogue too.
