The largest and oldest indoor market in the city, Central Market Hall, offers a variety of food, candy, spirits, and souvenir stalls. Let your mouth water as you wander the first floor of this Neo-Gothic building past fresh produce, meats, sweets, spices, liquors, and wine. The second floor houses mostly souvenir shops and eateries, and the basement features butcher shops, a fish market, and pickled goods. Built in 1897 and restored in the 1990s, this market was the idea of Budapest's first mayor, Karoly Kamermayer, and is now one of the city's biggest tourist attractions. Try local specialties, such as deep-fried lángos. To visit Central Market Hall and other attractions in Budapest, use our Budapest day trip planner.

I love markets to see the different foods that an area has to offer. The smoked meats, brightly colored fruits, and vegetables were interesting. The paprika strings reminded me of the chili ristras.... more »

Stunning building with some great fresh food stalls on ground floor but above dozens of little stalls selling the usual tourist tack. I also was very hungry so tried one of the food stalls... more »

Huge place to satisfy your visitor needs. Combines both ready made food with souvenirs as well as raw food materials. Easily accessible via tram. Prices seem medium to me (but take into consideration that I'm not local to this country so my pricing may be biased). Nice looking building inside n' out. Must definitely go there if you find yourself close by.

Good place to buy local produce and food, very traditional. You need to know what to look for to get by, as the shops are a mix of high quality products and very average or just below average (ask your local friends for advice before going there). The cleanliness of this historic building is still good and the shops keep it nice, but it could do well with some renovation for sure. Still a good place to go for local produce and buy a lot in one place saving time. I can still recommend it for both visitors and local folks alike. Easy to reach with public transport (tram stops right in front of the building or metro and a short walk). There is also public toilet, if needed.
