Trip Planner: Central America / Guatemala / Sacatepequez Department / Antigua / Iglesia de La Merced
See a fine example of colonial architecture and a storied place of worship at Iglesia de La Merced, a baroque church. Built on the site of a monastery established in 1548, but repeatedly damaged by earthquakes, the church was built as it appears today in 1767, as a squat structure designed to withstand tremors. The intricate facade displays a distinctly baroque style, with ornamental elements set in relief, and providing white highlights against the yellow of the main walls. The church's courtyard features a vast stone fountain, said by some to be the largest in Central America. Iglesia de La Merced reviews
Much has already been written about this amazing "Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Merced" (Church of Our Lady of Mercy, in English). It is a quite "brave" church, as it is one of the very few... more »
This church and its adjacent square is quite grand and worth seeing. The exterior has seasonal decorations when we were there and we didnt go inside. more »
It is definitely one of the most impressive religious structure of Antigua. It is strange to say that for such a small city but Antigua has so many religious buildinga such as churches, cathedrals and convents that it is so hard to pick one. Merced is just a few meters away from the iconic Santa Catalina Arc. In your visit not only you can enjoy the impressive colonial architecture of the church, but also you can taste fabulous food from street vendors located every day in front of the Merced. Do not forget to visit the adjacent cafeteria/restaurant also
Beautiful church with quite an elaborate entrance. The park in front is a good place to relax and grab a sandwich and a drink from the small vendors.
