Samaria Gorge National Park, Sfakia

#1 of 14 in Nature in Chania Prefecture
Featuring a dramatic feature of Crete's landscape, Samaria Gorge National Park serves as a major tourist attraction and a protected biosphere reserve, famous for sheltering the extremely rare kri-kri goats. Each year nearly 200,000 people walk through the national park's famous gorge, which starts at an altitude of 1,250 m (4,100 ft) and ends on the shores of the Libyan Sea. To avoid the worst of the crowds, start your hike as early in the day as you can. You cannot camp overnight in the gorge, so you must complete the 16 km (9 mi) hike in a single day. To discover the gorge in the company of other hikers, join a guided excursion through the park. Put Samaria Gorge National Park at the forefront of your travel plans using our Sfakia trip builder .

  • I bought an excursion from Almyrida at €45 K-Travel, which included bus transportation, entrance and a boat ticket. The departure was already at 5.45. At 8 o'clock I reached the start of the hike. First landing down to the gorge (approx. 2 km) and then varying the condition of the path about 11 km. Between the stone and several bursts on the bottom of the gorge. Filling the water bottle succeeded a few kilometers apart. The highlights of the old Samaria village halfway through and the Gorge's narroest point at the end. The time went in the gorge N 4t 15 min. From there another 2 km to the village of Agia Roumel, accessible by bus (€2). Bad was too long waiting time for the ship (4 hours) in the village of Agia Roumel. Worth having a later departure from the morning so don't miss so much waiting time. Good support shoes and headdress included. And cash, the card is not quite valid in the village!

  • We had signed up for a tour through our tour company. We started by going out about KL. 8:30 in the morning. And it's cold at the top of the mountain in the morning. I was leaving with my brother-in-law and my two sons of 19 and 15 (he is handicapped) we departed on the beautiful tour. We were aware that there was bad ground to go on. My advice is to not leave on the trip if you can't go far.
