#4 of 13 in Historic Sites in Heraklion
Tour a 16th-century defensive structure and pay your respects to a world-renowned writer at Venetian Walls and Tomb of Nikos Kazantzakis. The walls once protected Candia and boast two well-preserved gates, Chania and Kainouryia, where you can walk outside and around the perimeter. Nikos Kazantzakis, who penned the literary works "Zorba the Greek" and "The Last Temptation of Christ," was excommunicated by the church for his writings and thus denied burial in a cemetery. According to Kazantzakis' will, he was instead interred outside the walls of his hometown in 1947. Take time to walk around the walls, sit in peace, and admire views of surrounding mountains. • It could be the best spot in town and it should be. The place of the tomb on the top simple and thrifty, just as it should be. Unfortunately, he left you the impression of the neglected. Unmarked on the way up there, an unadorned herb finely yellable, right in front of the entrance door of a parked car. Beyond this disappointing image, the visit to the site leaves no emotion and is a tribute to the man who is there to rest in the most appropriate spot in the city.

  • The largest surviving walls of the eastern Mediterranean, the longest with fortifications and bastions, connected by a network of catacombs and arcades communicating all between them the same and key points of the city, having on their backs the largest Siege of the World in duration (21 years) AND we've abandoned THEM TO their FATE. Near the A-literacy and the interests of older city commanders to tear them already. Maybe it's better if we didn't have to compare how they turned out. These walls had to be in the Top3 monuments of Greece for the Venetian domination. Awesome work, static, strategy, etc. As for the bastion of Martinengo, where Nikos Kazantzakis lies, he does well and is simple because he was simple and wise, and Nikos (as he pulls us out of his books) but he wants attention that the evening outings of certain individuals who clearly and The city knows that but it does not have the human potential to do tests.
