Erechtheion, Athens

4.8
Across from the Parthenon, Erechtheion has gained acclaim for its south porch, which is supported by female figures in place of traditional columns. These six figures, called caryatids, play the same architectural role as columns and were built from marble. The caryatids are exact replicas of the originals, which are on display in a protected environment in the Acropolis Museum. The temple was built between 420 and 406 BCE, and the complex was designed to protect its several sacred shrines. • Built to give an abode to the Ereal King I, it is located near the Parthenon in the Acropolis of Athens. The entrance to the Acropolis includes the visit to this palace that has of particular of the women built in place of the columns. Very suggestive.

  • When I was here with my tour group last spring I found the Erechtheion to be an outstanding example of Classical Greek architecture, and I also found interest in how its a place of symbolic importance. The temple was dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon and in mythology they courted the Athenians favor with gifts. The Porch of the Caryatids is picturesque, though I should mention if you do visit you should see the Acropolis museum to see some of the original figures.
  • Absolutely a must see site. Note the Olive tree in the spot Athena put the first one. Also- note the signs around it detailing the temples there.
