St. Peter's Church, Munich

4.6
For a spectacular view of the surrounding city and the distant Alps, climb to the top of St. Peter's Church. This is the oldest church in the inner city. It was built during the Romanesque period on the site of an ancient monastic settlement. The building suffered extensive fire damage in 1327 and was expanded and re-consecrated in 1368. In the early 17th century, the 92 m (302 ft) spire received its Renaissance steeple top. A new Baroque choir was also added. Inside, look at the high altar for the figure of Saint Peter, created by sculptor Erasmus Grasser. Among other masterpieces, you'll find five Gothic paintings by artist Jan Polack and ceiling frescos by painter Johan Baptist Zimmermann. • This beautiful church reminds you of St. Peters in Rome. We took many photos of the interior, but you should spend the 3 euros to purchase the paper back book for vivid pictures and narration of the c...  more »
  • It originated in the 12th century and is one of the oldest churches in Munich. The nave is also wonderful, but I want to climb the clock tower which is nicknamed Altpeter by all means. You can also climb the clock tower of the new town hall by elevator, but if you choose one, if you are not worried about your legs, you want to climb the New Town Hall and Marienplatz from above. The visit was around 16:00 on Saturday. There was a line, and I was forced to wait about ten minutes for admission. Because the observation space is not so large, it seems to restrict admission. The stairs are 302 steps, and it is quite narrow, so it is difficult to pass up and down in the middle of the stairs, or to go ahead, but there are landing places in some places, so you can climb at your own pace. If you go up at once, you can climb in 5-6 minutes. The width of the observatory was also narrow, and it was crowded at the time of the visit, so I gave up going around. From the observation deck, you can see the New Town Hall, Marien Platz, as well as the Old Town Hall, Frauen Church, and Tiertea Church. You can also watch the Glockenspiel of the new town hall move from here.

  • Relatively interesting architecture on the outside and very interesting on the inside. Construction began in the 11th century on the site of an old wooden church. From time to time, something happened to the church, and restoration work changed it's style several times (Romanesque, Gothic, Rococo). During the last war, it suffered very much and restoration work lasted until 2000.
  • Fantastic of you on the top of the tower, you do have to climb a lot on the stairs, but well worth it. Take a break when you can. The platform on the top is a bit narrow, lots of people gathering around the side facing marientplaza. The church interiors and exterior are beautiful.
