The ruined Narikala Fortress looms over the city, forming a dramatic skyline which serves as a reminder of the area's turbulent history throughout the centuries. Damaged and unrepaired since an earthquake in 1827, the fortress has played host to Persians, Mongols, and Arab emirs, and was founded in the 4th century as a Persian citadel. There are no guided tours here, but a tourist walk runs around the fortress and down into the old town to the botanical gardens. It's a steep climb even inside the fortress, so wear comfortable shoes. Entry is free. Make Narikala Fortress a part of your Tbilisi vacation plans using our Tbilisi online trip itinerary planner .

The high walls are imposing and can be walked in a kind of defensive passage; But beware: there are no railings. Inside, the fortress has little to offer. There is a church with strict dress codes for women and a somewhat unrelaxed watchdog. From the fortress you can walk down a paved steep path into the city - and of course the other way around.
This place is a must go to all travelers seeking a complete 360° view of Tbilisi. The crumbling fortress walls and nearby hill gives additional thrill to hikers and adventure seekers, but be careful while climbing.
Wonderful to experience a fortress that you can climb up to the top of the ruins and look at over the town. Some of the upper track is quite hard terrain, so proper shoes are recommended. Well worth the climb to the top of the walls.
