Metekhi Cathedral, Tbilisi

#5 of 32 in Historic Sites in Tbilisi
Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Overlooking the river on a rocky outcropping, Metekhi Cathedral describes the history of the nation. Sitting on the location of King Vakhtang Gorgasali's fortified citadel, built in this strategic location when he founded the city, the cathedral has been rebuilt several times. During the Soviet years it was used as theater after several failed attempts by the city's leader to destroy the structure. Cross-copula in design, the current cathedral was built between 1278 and 1289. Enter the cathedral, where you'll see small alcoves along the walls and painted frescoes primarily in gold and reds. Outside, take in the views of the town from this vantage point. Plan my Tbilisi trip by asking Inspirock to come up with tips and suggestions.

  • We loves, loved, LOVED this beautiful Cathedral perched up on the hill and overlooking the river and the old town. We spent some time up there, as the views are beautiful all around!  more »
