Cathedrale St-Etienne, Toulouse

4.0
A bizarre mix of architectural styles from the 13th to the 17th centuries, Cathedrale St-Etienne has a Raymondine nave, a Northern Gothic choir, and a 16th-century gabled belfry. The beautiful but worn tapestries circa 1609, by Jean du Mazet, and the Baroque retable of the high altar are particularly noteworthy. In 1610, Pierre Monge of Narbonne carved mythological and pagan subjects from walnut in the choir stalls. The walnut case of the organ, rising 17 m (56 ft), above the floor was carved at the same time. The organ used for concerts was restored in 1868 by Cavaillé-Coll, and again in 1976.
