Canal du Midi, Occitanie

World heritage site · Water Body · Landmark
Canal du Midi is part of a network of canals that joins the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The canal is a major engineering feat: It features the first canal passage through a tunnel, as well as the first artificial reservoir created for feeding a canal waterway. At 240 km (150 mi) long, the canal is a collection of 91 locks, which allow vessels to ascend and descend a total of 190 m (620 ft). The canal network includes 328 structures, such as dams, bridges, and the tunnel. Soon after its construction in the 17th century, drainage ditches and more 40 aqueducts were added to manage flooding problems. Row, canoe, fish, or cruise on luxury barges. You also can walk or bike along the canal and enjoy the 40,000 trees that were planted to stabilize the banks.
