Debre Bizen, Asmara

4.0
#7 of 9 in Historic Sites in Asmara
A male-only monastery, Debre Bizen has witnessed an abundant and storied history since its founding in the 1350s. Monks at the institution resisted Ottoman pressures in the 16th century and managed to retain their faith, while today the monastery's library houses one of the oldest and most valuable Ge’ez manuscripts. Since the site sits at an altitude of 825 m (2,706 ft), and is only reachable by foot, you should wear shoes with thick soles and bring plenty of water for the walk. • SERENE...the only word that describes everything about Debre Bezien monastery. Not many tourists know about this place....and very few know how to reach here. We had done some research about this plac...  more »
  • It is a monastery Bizen mountain walk from the town of Nefasit, on top of three hours. It was built in the 14th century. Climbing shoes, water is absolutely necessary. It takes half a day. Tough to foreigners and hire local people may not. I visited with local travel arrangements. To get to the top and a sense of accomplishment. Monastery itself is quite large and is a village than a monastery. I feel people live about 50 people. Wonder why brought the materials to the rugged mountains of self-sufficiency of is a magical place. Not a solemn atmosphere. Suffer the sense visited the village would rather isolated from the real world of the mountains. Everything ends up in half a day if you hang. But it's great strength is not as long as after the Debre Bizen to tour somewhere hard is (Keren end Debre Bizen in the morning if I go back in Asmara and on its feet 90 kilometers away trips in the afternoon was pretty hard was). [Cautions] (1) is a strenuous climbing to go until you reach the Debre Bizen monastery from the town of Nefasit. I personally is Fuji climb. Road is not paved. Climbing shoes and water is required. (2) as well as the monastery and mountain passes are admitted. (3) looks cross right near the top of the climb, but not walk barefoot from around the. (Barefoot in the Tigrinya language to become a tree sign is located on the left side of the cross. Usually do not notice. ) (4) arrives in a monastery, and free dinner is ready. Patterns and practices is giving money to pass then any tourists is. So there is no opportunity and when its time to pay the alms needs attention.
