See a number of traditional churches belonging to the largest Christian community in the Middle East at Coptic Cairo, a historic part of town with many storied religious sites. The area has been of vital significance to the Copts, the largest Christian denomination in the region, who have built Orthodox churches here since the 4th century CE. Believed to have been visited by Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as they fled to Egypt, the neighborhood today draws scores of pilgrims. Take a tour of the main churches and head to the local museum to gain a better understanding of the history of the group, and how they came to thrive in the area. An amazing place, churches of antiquity, from the time of Christ, founded by St. Mark, a lot of history involved, and easy to visit all in a short time, because they are close, sometimes the place is a maze, but there are signs. Visit the monastery of St. George, also the Church of St. George, Church of the Virgin Mary, places where you will experience a fascinating peace. The Church of St. Sergio, which was built under the cave that would have housed the Holy Family, among other places. Finally, be sure to know the Coptic museum, which is very rich in history as well and keeps ancient relics and gospels, among several other objects, all very organized. It is worth spending half a day in this area, in contrast and at the same time in addition to everything you will see in Egypt, a country very rich in history, fascinating and striking in our memory.View original -
