Philae Temple, Aswan

#1 of 41 in Things to do in Aswan
Must see · Religious Site · Ruin
An island temple complex dedicated to the Ancient Egyptian goddess Isis, Philae Temple makes up part of a larger set of World Heritage-listed monuments. With hieroglyphs and monumental colonnades, the temple displays features from the late Pharaonic era, though alterations continued right up to the Byzantine period. Look for traces of Roman and Christian embellishments among the ruins, including sculptures, pillars, and archways. In the 1960s, the temple complex was moved to Agilkia Island, because of the dangers posed to the island of Philae by the construction of the Aswan High Dam. • A well preserved temple given the age and history. Pay particular attention to all of the Christian symbols from when it was converted and be careful feeding the stray cats.
