Must see · Landmark · Tourist Spot
A popular dive site off of San Cristobal Island, Dona Pilo showcases a wealth of diverse and colorful marine life. The two rocks, which were once connected, reflect what’s left of a lava cone jutting 140 m (459 ft) out of the water. To visit the landmarks, you must travel with a certified guide, so reserve a boat tour or diving trip. If you approach from the south, you might notice the rock formations' resemblance to a sleeping lion, hence the Spanish name "leon dormido." The two rocks join together 19 m (62 ft) below the surface, forming a narrow channel that small boats can pass through. Don your snorkelling gear to see what’s swimming beneath the surface, namely tropical fish, hammerhead sharks, green turtles, and the Galapagos shark.
