Marking the entry into Prague's historical old town, Prasna brana is one of the original city gates. Constructed in 1475 and intended for ceremonial rather than defensive purposes, the tower played a major role during the coronation parades of kings of Bohemia. Royalty continued to pass through this gate on their way to coronation ceremonies until the 17th century, when the tower became a major gunpowder depository (hence the name). Restored in the middle of the 19th century by architect Josef Mocker, the tower bears statues of several Bohemian kings and symbols of territories that they controlled. For sweeping views over the old town, visit the tower's 44 m (144 ft) high gallery. Arrange to visit Prasna brana and other attractions in Prague using our Prague trip itinerary builder tool .

The gunpowder tower is one of the most representative monuments in Prague. Built in Gothic style during the 15th century, it is one of the thirteen original gates of the city, which led to the old city, having been used during the seventeenth century to store gunpowder. Its location is very central, in the Place de la Republique, next to the fantastic art nouveau building of Obecní d'am. You can visit, accessing the upper galleries after climbing 185 steps, from where you can see magnificent views of the city. Opens every day; November to February, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; March and October, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; April to September, from 10 a.m. to 22 p.m. The price of the ticket is 100 kronor (about 4 euros). If you own the Prague Card we can visit it for free.View original

Imposing structure of beautiful design anchoring a highly opulent area that includes the national bank, theaters, fine hotels and more. I couldn't really see it from a distance but when I got closer and turned my head suddenly there it was! Well worth popping by to look at it and the other architectural sites in the immediate vicinity. I was hoping it would be well lit at not but when it got dark I just saw a few lights. Recommended!
