In 1731, a disastrous fire burned down all the wooden parts of Porta di Pietra (Kamenita Vrata), except the one item that was later found in the ashes: a painting of the Virgin and Child. Since then, this 13th-century gate has been a famous pilgrimage site. In the passageway you'll see a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God with her statuette, and plaques that the locals leave to convey gratitude to loved ones. They consider this place one of the symbols of the city. You may light a candle if you wish. Holy place, where you can pray, light candles and just feel the spirituality. Beautiful spot in the old town. more »
We were here on a Tuesday night from 8 pm - 9 pm during a worship service with songs and prayers. Flowers were given to the Virgin Mary and candles were lit as well. This is called The Kamenita Vrata in Croatian, or the stone gate. Legend has it that a painting of the Virgin Mary survived a fire, so this shrine was erected in her honor. Very cool place to come across during a walk through the historic upper town.
The Stone Gate is nothing especially exciting to look at. The highlight for me was the statue of George and the Dragon. The first such statue I have seen where George is paying his respects to the slain dragon. And so many people walk by, completely oblivious to it.
