Sudak Fortress, Sudak

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Sudak
Must see · Historic Site · Tourist Spot
Sitting on bare cliffs above the bay, Sudak Fortress served as an almost impregnable defense wall and citadel over the course of ten centuries. The complex stretches across 27.9 hectares (69 acres), featuring massive, well-preserved walls, towers, and buildings. Dating back to the 6th century, the fortress bears marks of the Byzantine and Genoese architectural styles. Take a walk along the two lines of defense and tour the remaining towers. You'll also see a temple that was transformed from a mosque to an Orthodox church, then to a Catholic cathedral, and finally to an archeological museum. Wear comfortable shoes.
