Trip Planner: South Pacific / Cook Islands / Southern Cook Islands / Rarotonga / Avarua / Punanga Nui
Do not miss the exciting cultural experience of Punanga Nui, a sprawling market offering produce, crafts, and much more. Traditional music sets the scene for a vibrant atmosphere, and you can spot dancers here and there while shopping. Freshly caught fish, honey, fruit, vegetables, and tropical flowers are all locally produced. If you do not plan to make your own dinner, head to the cooked-food tents instead. Sellers offer everything from mouthwatering fruit smoothies to kebabs. If you want to pick up some souvenirs, choose from pearls and shells, whale-bone necklaces, quilts, and sarongs. Put Punanga Nui on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Avarua visit planning website .

A little market. Designed for tourists. Grab a bite to eat. Same stuff through out but a nice morning day out. more »
The market is open every Saturday and is well worth a visit. We found lots of local foods and cultural dancing here. There are a few permanent food places to the back in particular I would suggest you try "Bitesize". The fish is from the owner I understand and he is a local fisherman. Needless to say the food is fresh and there is a good variety to choose from. If you love your coffee - Just past the market (but still part of it) there is a permanent coffee stand. (I cant recall the name, but you will clearly see it from the road side) Here you will find organic/fair-trade coffee that is on par with some of Auckland best coffee shops! Most of the places we tried coffee all serve take-away coffee in bio cups which I was very surprised about....Auckland is well behind in that respect.
Great fun for a Saturday morning stroll. Excellent vibe, with stalls and music. A couple of highlights were the waffles for breakfast and the hat painter. Very talented!
