Housed in a former synagogue, Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum holds historical photographs and other artifacts depicting the lives of Jewish refugees who flocked to the city between 1937 and 1941. Two permanent exhibits narrate the history of this area, which once served as an official Jewish ghetto. Discover artworks, refugee passports, and copies of the "Shanghai Jewish Chronicle." The surrounding streets still contain buildings inhabited by various Jewish organizations during the 1930s. Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum Reviews
This museum provide a great deal of knowledge of the Jewish community and the Shanghai community that accepted them and saved them from the Holocaust. Meaningful. Educational. more »
This is a bit of a haven in a busy area of Shanghai where you can learn about the incredible story of how Jewish refugees were sheltered in the 1930s more »
An overlooked part of Shanghai's wartime history, the area was known as Vienna of the East during the 30's and 40's which shows just how impressive it was that these refugees made it there home, sometimes with nothing after fleeing. All thanks to one Chinese consulate general in the Austrian embassy who issued 25,000 visas for life when other countries closed their doors to them. Well worth a visit to look around.
very hidden and hard to locate on the last mile. was glad that this place is significant enough to earn a place on the major road signage. place is well presented but not as good as the ones on Prague. guide was quite ok but too lengthy. exhibits are also properly displayed. the jews in shanghai were protected by God compared to those in europe. there are many happy stories in shanghai of good neighbours. those in Prague really made me weep.
