Longhua Temple, Shanghai

#7 of 85 in Historic Sites in Shanghai
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Pay a visit to Longhua Temple, a complex known for its ancient seven-story pagoda. Though many of the temple buildings are reconstructions of earlier designs, the site as a whole has retained the Song dynasty architectural style it gained when rebuilt in 977 CE, with the overall layout following the Sangharama Five-Hall Style common to Chan Buddhist temples during the period. The pagoda's upturned eaves, decorative balconies, and ornate banisters have been repaired over the years, but its brick base and body date all the way back to the 10th century CE. Join the worshippers or simply watch and take in the atmospheric scene. To visit Longhua Temple on your holiday in Shanghai, and find out what else Shanghai has to offer, use our Shanghai.
