Jing'an Temple, Shanghai

#6 of 85 in Historic Sites in Shanghai
Religious Site · Historic Site
Guarded by a four-headed lion mounted on a huge pillar, Jing'an Temple stands as Shanghai's most famous religious center. The large Buddhist temple offers a sanctuary and retreat for pilgrims and tourists alike. Originally build in 247 CE, it features a 3.8 m (12 ft) tall jade Buddha weighing 11 tons, as well as a large Ming-period bronze bell. Admire delicate impressionistic 18th-century paintings and calligraphy by the so-called Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, favored by Europeans of the time. An important urban landmark, the temple was a starting point for Shanghai's first tramcar. • First of all, this ancient temple by itself is absolutely marvelous. Fantastically decorated, full of mystery and history. You can easily spend a few hours here. Having said that, it's pretty...  more »
  • Located near many large shopping centers, Jing'an Temple is a great place to visit if you want to come to a place with a little bit of history. Since there are so many people here burning incense it can get a little smoky. There are many vendors in the temple that sell good luck trinkets.
  • A beautifully restored temple in the middle of modern Shanghai. Definitely recommend visiting to experience some local culture and spirituality. Entry tickets are $50, which seems steep, however they have done a good job restoring the temple and also considering its location next to upmarket retail and food centres. Conveniently located next to the metro subway.
