Barker's National Park Reviews
I loved Barker's. The western part of the island is pretty crowded, but Barker's is an area of beach, Caribbean coppice and mangroves that can get you to real nature or simply a bit of seclusion. Ther... more »
This so called "Park" is a travesty. I blame the British Royal Family. There isn't even a park entrance or sign. Its a maze of unpaved crisscrossing roads with scrub brush and burnt out cars like some... more »
Beautiful place if you want to get away from the big crowds and just enjoy nature with your group. It may be a bit hard to get to if there's rain, but that could be an additional advantage.
Wife and I went birdwatching here early February 2019. Tip: Google Maps doesn't have roads that lead to where we parked (indicated on map), so put your destination at the entrance to the park to the northwest. We walked 1.3 miles around Palmetto Lake, and saw the following birds: Blue-winged teal, Black-necked stilt (lots), Osprey, Little Blue Heron, Reddish Egret, Northern Flicker, WIllet, Yellow Warbler, Least Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Great Egret, Royal Tern, Magnificant Frigatebird, Bananaquit, Brown Pelican, Green Heron, Tricolored Heron, and Belted Kingfisher. The lake is very shallow and the water level depends on recent rains, but it is full of birds and snags. The ditches along the west side of our route contain fish, and may have herons and other birds. All-in-all a great place to birdwatch on Grand Cayman; the other places I'd recommend are the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park and Governor Gore's Bird Sanctuary.
