Trip Planner: Europe / Bosnia and Herzegovina / Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina / Sarajevo Canton / Sarajevo / Jewish Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Names, photographs, and personal possessions of 12,000 Jewish victims of World War II are kept at Jewish Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in a 1581 synagogue. Surrounded by bare walls and wooden floors, the site houses an artistic exhibit that outlines the suffering of Bosnia's Jewish population, who were originally expelled from Spain in 1566 and found refuge in Sarajevo. See the synagogue that became a prison after 1941, and find out how this community helped shape the history, art, and culture of their host country until the war ended. Read stories of the volunteers who protected the Jews during their struggle. Jewish Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina Reviews
Sarajevo is not a city best known for its Jewish heritage, so to find this place, an old synagogue was a revelation. I had no idea there was such a rich Jewish heritage here - the information re the..... more »
This is a very nice museum settled in an old sepharadic synagogue. The temple itself is very nice. You will learn a lot about the Jewish life and history in Sarajevo. There is a sad section about the.... more »
This beautiful building dates back 500 years and survived the wars with relatively little damage. Now only used religiously on special Jewish occasions it is converted to a museum over 3 floors displaying various artifacts of Jewish culture and their time in Bosnia & Hertzogovina. A large book hangs from the ceiling detailing the names of 12000 Jews killed here in WW2. The displayed circumcision knife made my eyes water. Very cheap to enter, just 3KM.
Amazing and poignant! A beautiful structure still being used occasionally by the Jewish community of Sarajevo, Bosnia Filled with real artifacts and photos cataloguing the history of Sephardic Jews in Sarajevo, before WWII. Run by Jews, but made as a sober but loving gift to everyone, this restored synagogue & museum give justice to the triumph of the Chosen people under the Nazis and the efforts of non-Jewish Bosnians to resist the systematic antisemitic propoganda, risking their lives to save their Jewish neighbors!
